Lactobacillus plantarum AS1 Isolated from South Indian Fermented Food Kallappam Suppress 1,2-Dimethyl Hydrazine (DMH)-Induced Colorectal Cancer in Male Wistar Rats

Abstract: The relationship between antioxidant and anticancer properties of probiotic bacterium strain Lactobacillus plantarum AS1 (AS1) in colon cancer induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) has been studied. In this study, an increased level of lipid peroxide (LPO) products and increased activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione-S transferase) and marker enzymes (alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase) in colon and plasma of cancer-bearing animals have been observed. AS1 was … Show more

“…Lactic acid bacteria can reduce the activity of various procarcinogenic enzymes capable of generating oxidative stress by improving absorption of food and scavenging free radicals generated. 63 Colonic fermentation of GO selectively enhances growth of probiotics and produces 1-6 carbon SCFAs. BA among all SCFAs exhibits the highest antimutagenic effect by inducting GST, up-regulating alkaline phosphatase.…”

“…Kumar et al [93] tested the efficacy of L. plantarum AS1 in the suppression of colorectal cancer induced by DMH in rats and formed that AS1 was capable of diminishing colon tumor through its antioxidant activity. However, long-term administration of this strain was necessary to achieve the maximum inhibitory effect.…”
