Lamello-Columnar Mesophase Formation in a Side-Chain Liquid Crystal π-Conjugated Polymer Architecture

Abstract: A new kind of side-chain liquid crystal semiconducting polymer where the backbone is a π-conjugated polymer and the side groups are π-conjugated discotic mesogens self-assembles in a peculiar lamello-columnar mesophase where a 2D oblique columnar lattice and the lamellar piling coexist in the same structure.

“…Many systematic studies on the influence of the molecular constitution and stacking on the mesomorphism have been reported for organic liquid crystals. 5,12,13,14,15 There are also studies on metal-containing liquid crystals (metallomesogens). 16 It is important to note that metallomesogens can display intermolecular interactions additional to those existing in purely organic systems.…”

“…41,42 These measurements provided a deep insight into the supramolecular organization and permitted the complete elucidation of the bulk polymer structures, showing that most of these polymers self-organize into mesophases possessing intertwined lamellocolumnar morphologies resulting from the co-existence of lath-like backbones arranged face-to-face into layers, columns of stacked triphenylene rings aligned into rows, and molten aliphatic chains forming a continuum around the columns and between the layers and rows. The lamellae naturally emerge from the alternation of layers, continuum and rows, but the effective appearance of a mesophase, the type of structure, and the range are largely determined by the length of the aliphatic spacer connecting the backbones to the rings.…”

“…41,42 In this series, we first examined the influence of pertinent structural parameters such as the length of the aliphatic spacer between the polymeric backbone and the discotic side groups on the molecular ordering. Figure 1a displays the chemical structures of the triphenylene side-chain PT m T homopolymers and the general synthetic procedure used to prepare these materials.…”
