LANC: Locality-aware network coding for better P2P traffic localization

Abstract: As ISPs begin to cooperate to expose their network locality information as services, e.g., P4P, solutions based on locality information provision for P2P traffic localization will soon approach their capability limits. A natural question is: can we do any better provided that no further locality information improvement can be made? This paper shows how the utility of locality information could be limited by conventional P2P data scheduling algorithms, even as sophisticated as the local rarest first policy.Netw… Show more

“…However, this study focused on the application-level performance, not providing any quantitative evaluation of the network-level performance, such as resource utilization efficiency. Recently, we began to recognize that network coding can be an effective way to reduce cross domain P2P traffic [18]. In [35], the authors also developed similar idea of using network coding to reduce congestion in networks in parallel with our work.…”

“…Interestingly enough, NC can help in localizing P2P traffic too. A locality-aware network coding (LANC) P2P streaming system has been proposed in [77]. It uses locality information in both the topology construction and the segment scheduling.…”

WIRELESS MULTIMEDIA APPLICATIONS Wireless environments lend themselves naturally to network coding, thanks to the inherent overhearing and superposition capabilities of the wireless medium. The former (overhearing) provides side information to each next-hop node, which can then be used for decoding coded packets.…”
