Landau Damping to Partially Locked States in the Kuramoto Model

Abstract: In the Kuramoto model of globally coupled oscillators, partially locked states (PLS) are stationary solutions that capture the emergence of partial synchrony when the interaction strength increases. While PLS have long been considered, existing results on their stability are limited to neutral stability of the linearized dynamics in strong topology or to specific invariant subspaces (obtained via the so‐called Ott‐Antonsen (OA) ansatz) with specific frequency distributions for the oscillators. In the mean‐fiel… Show more

“…In the limit as N → ∞, there are two ways to recast the Kuramoto model. The first one is to use the one-oscillator probability density to derive a kinetic Kuramoto equation in the mean-field limit, see for example, [1,2,3,8,9,26,27,28]. For the stability issue, in [4] Carrilo et al studied the complete synchronization of kinetic Kuramoto model and derive some estimate for stability of measure-valued solutions in the Wasserstein distance.…”

“…Before we discuss how to find solutions for the transport equation 10, it is worth noting that it has been analyzed directly in the context of functional analysis for networks of Kuramoto oscillators. Stationary solutions of (10) and their stability have been studied recently in the context of all-to-all coupled networks of Kuramoto oscillators [108][109][110][111][112]. Taking the mean-field limit for N → ∞ depends on the homogeneity of the network.…”

“…Landau Damping) for the full Vlasov-Poisson system (1.1) on the whole space. Landau Damping was studied in the breakthrough paper [17] by Mouhot and Villani in the case of T d × R d (see also [3] and very recently [14] and also [8,9] for related models). All these works are based on a linear mechanism called phase mixing, which is specific to the free transport operator ∂ t + v • ∇ x on the torus; furthermore they require perturbations of Gevrey or analytic regularity to handle the non-linear problem, in order to avoid resonances referred to as plasma echoes.…”
