Large Benign Cystic Teratoma of the Mesosigmoid Causing Intestinal Obstruction: Report of a Case

Abstract: We report the case of a large benign cystic teratoma of the mesosigmoid in a 2-year-old child. To the best of our knowledge, this type of lesion has never been described in the English literature, although there are a few reports of teratomas arising from the greater and lesser omentum. There was diagnostic confusion due to the rarity of a teratoma arising from the peritoneal folds and also because calcification was not detected radiologically. A brief review of the literature on the diagnosis and treatment of… Show more

“…Computed tomography is generally the most helpful imaging modality for diagnosis. 1,8 However, MRI allows for improved soft-tissue identifi cation, and is useful for diagnosing the encasement or invasion of blood vessels, which aids in assessing malignant potential and resectability. Magnetic resonance imaging may also indicate if a wider resection is required, 2 although it is very diffi cult to establish the origin of a teratoma preoperatively by imaging examinations alone, so all results should be analyzed carefully and careful preparation made for unexpected intraoperative fi ndings.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6] We describe the case of a 7-year-old girl with abdominal mass leading to intestinal obstruction due to an immature teratoma arising from mesentery of jejunum. To the best of our knowledge only one case of immature mesenteric teratoma has been reported in the English literature earlier.…”

“…Teratomas arising from embryonic cells are located in extra gonadal sites, particularly in pediatric age group. Many extra-gonadal sites have been reported, including the tongue [9] , face, cranium [2] , the large bowel [10] , mediastinum, retro peritoneum, sacro-coccygeal and presacral region [11] . Most common sites of teratomas in neonates are the sacro-coccygeal and presacral regions.…”
