Learn how to develop software using the toy LEGO Mindstorms

Abstract: The use of the toy LEGO Mindstorms has been used more o f e n in Engineering and Computer Sciences courses in several countries. Undergraduate students at Texas A&.M LlniversilyCorpus Christi implemented seven robotics applications as the final project for the Software Analysis and Design course. The students applied the knowledge acquired in other courses such as Sofware Engineering, Databases. and several programming courses. The students used Microsof Project for the planning phase and the CASE tool Visible… Show more

“…In most cases, there was a lack of a software process when developing the programs to run on the robot. In the cases were there was a software process, the students were not in control of the requirements and the process left out teaching configuration management [6] [15], which is essential when working on software projects in industry. This paper looks at the software development methodology used to create the software to perform the missions and compares the student experience from last year to this one.…”

“…Several studies have been done to detail how using Lego robotics can assist in engineering education. Some studies were done at the K-12 level [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12], while others were done at the college level [13][14][15][16][17]. In most cases, there was a lack of a software process when developing the programs to run on the robot.…”

“…LEGO Mindstorms' programming environment (LSOFT) is in visual programming environment, which novice users can easily adopt the programming skills for robot. User without any programming skills or knowledge on robots can easily learn to use LEGO because visual programming provided by LEGO is fun and simple [2].…”

“…It is a traditional way to educate C language but it is also limited and fixed. With the RCX, we can download program to it and look at the program running in a robot, which is more interesting compared with the monitor based outputs [1].…”
