“…This contrasts to the de¼cit of left-sided tumours at many other sites (Brewster et al, 2007). Handedness in application of skincare products may yet explain this phenomenon in both cases (Darbre, 2003;Brewster et al, 2007).…”

“…The higher rate of melanoma in younger people (Gavin and Walsh, 2005;Strouse et al, 2005;Downard et al, 2007), the increasing incidence in youth (Strouse et al, 2005;Downard et al, 2007) and the inverse relationship with social deprivation (Gavin and Walsh, 2005) could all correlate with greater use of paraben-containing skincare/suncare products, be it through more lavish amounts at each application, more frequent applications or a lifestyle where products are required more often and at higher levels. It is interesting to note the recently reported left-sided excess of invasive cutaneous melanoma in six different countries (Brewster et al, 2007), which echos remarkably the similar ¼ndings of left-sided excess of breast cancers . This contrasts to the de¼cit of left-sided tumours at many other sites (Brewster et al, 2007).…”

“…The most extensive analysis of the lateralization of melanoma was conducted by Brewster in 2007. This author, by analyzing the data of 98221 patients from 6 European countries, reported a higher incidence of this tumor on the left side (RR 1.10, 95% CI 1.08-1.11) and presented the hypothesis explaining the phenomenon [22]. In our group of 255 patients in 152 (59.6%) the primary lesion was located on the posterior surface of the trunk and the remaining 103 on the anterior surface.…”

“…In 96 (37.6%) patients, the primary lesion was present on the right site whereas 113 on the left site, and 46 (18%) in the medial region. The differences observed in the distribution of primary lesions may be due to the geographic regions in which the studies were conducted, varying exposure to sunlight, and different patterns of patient behavior [22].…”
