Lesions of presumed congenital origin in the accessory sex glands of bulls

Abstract: A detailed description of lesions of presumed congenital origin involving the accessory sex glands of 11 bulls is given. All of these lesions would have been detectable by careful clinical examination during bull evaluation. Evidence presented here supports the view that congenital abnormalities such as bilateral ampulla-seminal vesicle fusion, ampulla cysts associated with luminal constriction, cysts of urogenital sinus origin, prostatic appendage, and persistent remnant of the urachus could sometimes be resp… Show more

“…The findings in this bull show some similarities to previously described cases of bovine segmental aplasia of the mesonephric duct (Saunders and Ladds 1978;Campero et al 1989). Saunders and Ladds (1978) reported unilateral mesonephric duct aplasia affecting four shorthorn bulls, the ampullae were absent in two cases and hypoplastic in the other two.…”

“…The condition is characterized by partial or complete absence of structures derived from the mesonephric duct, including the epididymis, ductus deferens, ampullae and seminal vesicles (Foster 2016). Both uni-and bilateral aplasia of the mesonephric duct has been described in the bull McGowan, Holland and Boe-Hansen (Saunders and Ladds, 1978;Campero et al, 1989). These abnormalities are considered to be heritable but the mode of inheritance is poorly understood (Saunders and Ladds, 1978).…”
