The global public health crisis unleashed by the COVID-19 pandemic has made it clear that digital competence in education is no longer an option, but a necessity. Online communication with friends using social networks is an activity in which young people very frequently and at increasingly early ages engage. This article presents the results of a study analyses digital-competence levels in the area of communication of Spanish basic-education students (aged 12–16) and establishes whether online communication with friends and the use of social media impact it. A quantitative methodology with a descriptive and cross-sectional design was used. The sample comprised 807 students, and data collection was based on a problem-solving test. Findings show that students who use online communication with their friends very often and that those who use social networks a lot have lower levels of digital competence. Education centres should reflect on this in order to implement curricular programs that may strengthen this type of competence.

El avance tecnológico de los dispositivos móviles ha cambiado significativamente la manera en que los estudiantes se comunican e interactúan. Se presenta una investigación cuya finalidad es analizar el nivel de competencia digital, en el área de comunicación, que tienen escolares españoles de 12-16 años, y determinar si el uso de WhatsApp y correo electrónico influyen en él. Se empleó una metodología cuantitativa, se trabajó con una muestra de 807 estudiantes y se utilizó una prueba de resolución de problemas para la recogida de datos. Los resultados evidencian que el uso de estas herramientas comunicativas no mejora el nivel competencial.

Theoretical Models Explaining the Level of Digital Competence in Students

In the new global scene, digital skills are a key skill for students to seize new learning opportunities, train to meet the demands of the labor market, and compete in the global market, while also communicating effectively in their everyday and academic lives. This article presents research aimed at relating the impact of personal variables on the digital competence of technical problem solving in Spanish students from 12 to 14 years old. A quantitative methodology with a cross-sectional design was employed. A sample of 772 students from 18 Spanish educational institutions was used. For data collection, an assessment test was designed (ECODIES®) based on a validated indicator model to evaluate learners’ digital competence (INCODIES®), taking as a model the European framework for the development of digital competence. Mediation models were used and theoretical reference models were created. The results allowed us to verify the influence of personal, technology use, and attitudinal variables in the improvement of digital skill in technical problem solving. The findings lead to the conclusion that gender, acquisition of digital devices, and regular use do not determine a better level of competence.
