Limitations on the Use of Recycled Asphalt Pavement in Structural Concrete

Abstract: Recycled materials from construction and demolition waste, such as recycled concrete aggregate, recycled brick aggregate, or recycled asphalt coming from the milling of road/motorway surfaces, are the key for a sustainable production of concrete. This paper reviews in particular the use of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) aggregates in the production of concrete for structural uses. An overview is initially presented to describe the different areas of use of RAP, its definition and the limitations imposed by co… Show more

“… Smaller stone fractions 0/4, 4/8, 8/16, and 16/31;  Bitumen for road construction 50/70. Three recycled asphalt mixtures with different proportions of road bitumen (5.2%, 5.50%, and 6.10%) were studied in the laboratory to prepare test formulations [1,31]. Based on the laboratory results, an ideal granulometric composition of 4.90% 50/70 road bitumen was established following the standard EN 12697-8 and considering the percentage of voids and their filling.…”

“…Asphalt is an artificial product made from various ingredients. It has been used in the construction sector for about 125 years, especially in railroad and road construction [1]. Advances in science and technology have enabled the recycling of asphalt, thus favoring its reuse in construction infrastructure.…”

“…Hence, the application of recycled concrete as an aggregate in ECC is conducive to the sustainable improvement and progress of the construction industry. Jaawani et al [19] studied the impact of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) on the flexural strength, CS, durability, and other performance indexes of concrete to determine the possibility of RAP being applied in structural concrete.…”

“…The European average of RA reused in pavement construction currently lies at 60% [3]; however, some nations greatly outperform this average. Some examples of nations which have the highest usage of RA in pavements are Germany, France, and Spain, which report using 84%, 76%, and 72.7% of all reclaimed asphalt in pavement activities, respectively [4].…”
