Linking psychology and public health: A predoctoral clinical training program in youth violence prevention.

Abstract: Although clinical psychology has made strides in developing prevention and intervention strategies to reduce youth violence, there has been little attention to skills-oriented preprofessional training to prepare graduate students for practice roles in this emerging area of public health concern. This article describes a practicum training experience that prepares doctoral-level clinical psychology trainees to serve as youth violence prevention service providers, trainers, and consultants.

“…Given that psychologists increasingly are called on to conduct systems-oriented interventions and consultations, educators must provide more training in these systems-based interventions. Fortunately, there are good models for training in systems-oriented work in management (Campbell, Buhrow, & Liebscher, 2000), primary care (Anderson & Lovejoy, 2000), and urban and rural (Sears, Evans, & Perry, 1998; Yung, Hammond, Sampson, & Warfield, 1998) settings. The finding that both groups placed relatively low importance on training in supervision, as well as consultation, is interesting, because APA's (2000b) accreditation guidelines describe consultation and supervision as competencies to be developed at the graduate school and internship level.…”

“…Health psychology as a specialization has notably advocated for the public health role of future psychologists, particularly where it concerns contributing to public health policy (Abraham & Michie, 2005; Wardle & Steptoe, 2005). Other specializations are also beginning to offer training experiences to better prepare future psychologists for roles in public health promotion (Wohlford, Myers, & Callan, 1993; Yung, Hammond, Sampson, & Warfield, 1998).…”
