Litteratura Coleopterologica (1758–1900): a guide to selected books related to the taxonomy of Coleoptera with publication dates and notes

Abstract

Bibliographic references to works pertaining to the taxonomy of Coleoptera published between 1758 and 1900 in the non-periodical literature are listed. Each reference includes the full name of the author, the year or range of years of the publication, the title in full, the publisher and place of publication, the pagination with the number of plates, and the size of the work. This information is followed by the date of publication found in the work itself, the dates found from external sources, and the libraries consulted for the work. Overall, more than 990 works published by 622 primary authors are listed. For each of these authors, a biographic notice (if information was available) is given along with the references consulted.

Importance: nomenclatural action to restrict the submission of superfluous generic names Tomogonopus (Diplopoda, Spirostreptida, Spirostreptidae) a replacement name for Umbraticus Özdikmen, 2009 (Spirostreptida, Spirostreptidae)

Bousquet (2016), in his detailed analysis of numerous works of the Coleoptera literature, agreed with Alsonso-Zarazaga & Lyal. However, the affected generic names are not on the Official Index of suppressed names by the ICZN and to our knowledge no formal application has been made to the ICZN to suppress Voet's work Umbraticus Özdikmen, 2009 is a junior homonym of Umbraticus Voet, 1806[or Bakhuysen, 1806 and invalid according to ICZN article 52.…”

However, according to Bousquet (2016), the plates were issued by livraisons and their publication dates are still unknown. The publication date given by delKesKamp (1939,1977) and BlacKWelder (1945) for the figure of C. basalis is therefore maintained despite its inaccuracy.…”

Digitonthophagus Balthasar, 1959: taxonomy, systematics, and morphological phylogeny of the genus revealing an African species complex (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae)

“…At this point, there is no realistic possibility of finding out the true historical details about these specimens. The most likely chain of events is that Fabricius had only the large male specimen lacking geographic information when he described the species in the appendix of the second volume of Mantissa Insectorum published in December 1787 (Evenhuis 1997;Bousquet 2016). The original description is clear: "occipite cornubus duobus arcuatis", and can only apply to the specimen with two well-developed cephalic horns.…”

“…Scarabaeus catta Fabricius was described in the first volume of Mantissa Insectorum. This work, which contained the Coleoptera, was published in June 1787 (Evenhuis 1997;Bousquet 2016). There is a misspelling of the type locality (Ceromandel) in the original description, but there is no doubt that it pertains to Coromandel Coast, which historically was covering the coastal area of the current states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.…”
