Local Order and Dynamics of Nanoconstrained Ethylene-Butylene Chain Segments in SEBS

Abstract: Subtle alterations in the mid-block of polystyrene- b -poly (ethylene-co-butylene)- b -polystyrene (SEBS) have a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the resulting microphase separated materials. In samples with high butylene content, the ethylene- co -butylene (EB) phase behaves as a rubber, as seen by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), time domain (TD) and Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) NMR, X-ray scattering at small (SAXS),… Show more

“…Figure 15b evidence also that LB1 possesses a higher order parameter than SEBS with high butylene content (HB1) for the mobile fraction and the existence of at least two zones with different dynamic order parameters, as obtained from MQ build-up analysis. The results were explained in terms of the presence of a so-called rotator mesophase [82]. Another kind of phase transition that can be studied is the crystallization process.…”

“…The soft ethylene‐butylene (EB) segment ensures the elastomer property for the low glass transition temperature ( T g ). [ 15 ] However, for the poor processability, research studies often compound SEBS with other polymers and oil to obtain materials with good mechanical properties and processability. [ 16 ] Polypropylene (PP), a semicrystalline polyolefin resin, combining good mechanical and thermal properties is widely applied in many industrial and life fields.…”

“…However, no evidence has been found for potential low-temperature crystallization and melting in first-heating modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) thermograms (Figure a). Moreover, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements (Figure b and Table S2) on pristine, porous, and activated SEBS films exhibit broad diffuse scattering patterns centered at ∼20°, showing a short-range-ordered microstructure without any sign of crystallinity. , Moreover, full width at half-maximum (FWHM) remains unaffected by the polymer–gas-phase separation, dismissing any concerns for changes in the crystalline phase (Table S2). Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data on the same SEBS type has revealed the presence of cylindrical PS blocks associated with a nanoscale self-assembled hexagonal lattice structure. , Lorentz-corrected SAXS profiles (Figure c) on pristine, porous, and activated SEBS films imply similar short-range order for the cylindrical PS blocks irrespective of their state within the entire activation process.…”
