“…The reagent (FITC-pepsin anti-human F(ab'),) had an F/P ratio of 1.5-3.0 (15). Rabbit anti-human thymocyte antiserum was p r s pared as previously described (16,17). Rabbits were immunized with intravenous injections of viable human thymocytes obtained from the thymuses of children undergoing cardiac surgery.…”

“…Rabbits were immunized with intravenous injections of viable human thymocytes obtained from the thymuses of children undergoing cardiac surgery. Before use the following absorptions of the rabbit antiserum were performed: eight serial absorptions for 30-60 minutes at 37°C with B cells (5 X lo' cells/ml) from patients with chronic lymphatic leukemia; three serial absorptions with rhesus-positive red cells (5 X 10B/ml) from normal blood donors for 30 minutes a t 37°C; two serial absorptions for 30 minutes at 37°C with polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes (15 X 10B/ml) isolated during in vitro assays for chemotaxis (18); two absorptions with an equal volume of insolubilized normal serum (19); and finally absorption with an insolubilized homogenate of normal human liver (17). Goat anti-rabbit antiserum used in indirect fluorescence studies was obtained from the Meloy Co, Springfield, Virginia.…”

“…Although corticosteroid therapy had increased the survival rate and improved the clinical course of patients who had specific types of chronic hepatitis (20), there was, no evidence that such therapy could prevent the development of cirrhosis (20)(21)(22) (23)(24)(25). Not only chronic (active) hepatitis of viral or unknown etiology but also alcoholic hepatitis and its progression to cirrhosis has been attributed to immunologic mechanisms (24,26 (25).…”
