Long-Term Cancer-Specific and Overall Survival for Men Followed More Than 10 Years After Primary and Salvage Cryoablation of the Prostate

Abstract: The long-term results of prostate cryotherapy in our series indicate an 87% overall 10-year prostate-cancer-specific survival, despite early cryotherapy technology and the majority of patients being D'Amico high risk.

“…If the prediabetic or diabetic state results in a more aggressive prostate cancer, 28,29 then immortality bias might contribute to why we did not find a significant increase risk of prostate cancer in the pre-diabetic period. However, we do not believe immortality bias is a major bias in our study, since most patients with prostate cancer survive beyond 10 years, 30 allowing for enough time to develop DM and be appropriately classified.…”

“…Single-centre reports with long-term oncological outcome data have been published recently [20,21] . According to the cohort from Columbia University (51 patients), the 10-year disease-specific mortality was 15.5% [20] . Analysis of the updated oncological outcome for patients treated at the University of Western Ontario revealed a 10-year bDFS of 39% [21] .…”

“…[1][2][3][4] Cryotherapy has gained acceptance as a clinical tool for the treatment of internal malignancies, including carcinomas of the prostate. [5][6][7][8][9] This method of tissue ablation belongs to a larger category of thermal therapies and causes cancer cells to undergo coagulative necrosis as a result of deep freezing. A modern cryosurgical procedure employs thin cryoprobes (needles) of about 1.5 to 3 mm in diameter, which are precisely positioned near the cancerous tissue guided by ultrasound (US) imaging.…”
