Low-Latency Oriented Network Planning for MEC-Enabled WDM-PON Based Fiber-Wireless Access Networks

Abstract: WDM-PON-based mobile edge computing (MEC)-enabled fiber wireless access networks (MFWAN) have been identified as a promising technology for next-generation broadband access. Lowlatency oriented network planning of the WDM-PON-based MFWAN would be required for low-latency access to newly emerging latency-sensitive applications in the fifth-generation (5G) era. However, this would require a low-latency oriented network design in the network planning phase and has thus become a crucial challenge. In this paper, w… Show more

“…The scalable inter-programming method is proposed to solve the cost-effective deployment over TDM-PON based hybrid cloudlet placement architecture [27]. In addition, our former proposed study investigates the low-latency oriented network planning of MEC-enabled FiWi access networks while satisfying physical and management constraints [28].…”

“…Hence, the integrated optical wired and wireless access technologies, will be the promising candidate, have been studied recently [9][10][11]. However, to achieve higher capacity for data transmission, wavelength-divisionmultiplexing (WDM) access technology could be the better choice [12,13]. In addition, in the present PON architecture, the tree-, ring-and bus-based fiber networks have been built and demonstrated [14,15].…”

“…The Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) paradigm, which is also known as Mobile Edge Computing, has been introduced to bring computing and storage resources in close physical proximity of the wireless end devices [2], [3]. For instance, MEC resources can be co-located with the base stations (BSs) or backhaul entities of cellular wireless communications [4], as illustrated in the left half of Figure 1.…”
