LCL-Filter Design for Robust Active Damping in Grid-Connected Converters

Abstract: Grid connected converters employ LCL-filters, instead of simple inductors, because they allow lower inductances while reducing cost and size. Active damping, without dissipative elements, is preferred to passive damping for solving the associated stability problems. However, large variations in the grid inductance may compromise system stability, and this problem is more severe for parallel converters. This situation, typical of rural areas with solar and wind resources, calls for robust LCL-filter design. Thi… Show more

“…According to the KF features, a KF-based observer is optimum in presence of noise [14] and improves the dynamics of the closed-loop system in noisy environments. For this reason, the proposed method is focused on the statespace model defined by (20)- (21) used in a KF algorithm. This model forces the estimated inverter-side currents to get similar dynamics as in the case of a VSI with only one inductor.…”

“…The LCL filter offers a resonance frequency which can be a source of instability in the closed-loop system. This problem is stated by various researchers in the literature and numerous damping strategies are proposed to solve it [62][63][64][65]. Damping methods can be classified into two groups.…”

“…Though, these approaches change attenuation of the filter, as a result of which losses increases [18,32,34]. The passive damping techniques, presented generally in the literature, results in the addition of a simple resistor in series with the filter capacitor [63]. The major drawback of this technique is a reduction in filter attenuation, increasing power losses and large filter volume [62].…”
