<p class="SP315417">Taxonomy and distribution of the salamander genus Bolitoglossa Duméril, Bibron &amp; Duméril, 1854 (Amphibia, Caudata, Plethodontidae) in Brazilian Amazonia

Abstract: For nearly 40 years Bolitoglossa paraensis has been synonymized with Bolitoglossa altamazonica. This fact has been mainly related to taxonomic ambiguities arising from the morphological similarities between these species and the scarcity of material deposited in collections. However, during the past 30 years new material of Bolitoglossa has been collected in many places throughout the Brazilian Amazonia, including the type locality of B. paraensis, Santa Isabel do Pará. In this article we designate the neotype… Show more

“…A recent review of the taxonomy and distribution of the salamanders of the genus Bolitoglossa in Brazil enabled the recognition of five species within the genus for the Brazilian Amazon (Brcko et al 2013). Of these, Bolitoglossa caldwellae was described for the municipalities of Cruzeiro do Sul, Marechal Thaumaturgo and Porto Walter, Acre State.…”

“…Although it represents the third highest richness of anurans among the Brazilian states (Toledo & Batista 2012), this biodiversity can be considered underestimated in number and complexity when considering the political limits, given the existence of a large number of cryptic species (Funk et al 2011), several sampling gaps due to the concentration of researches in a few areas (Azevedo-Ramos & Galatti 2002) and the scarcity of studies that use appropriate methods for the record of amphibians belonging to different niches (Lynch, 2005). However , the number of recorded species has increased rapidly, with frequent descriptions of new species of anurans (e.g., Nunes et al 2012, Simões et al 2013, Peloso et al 2014, Rojas et al 2014) and amphibians of the orders Gymnophiona (Maciel & Hoogmoed 2011) and Caudata (Brcko et al 2013) for the biome.…”

“…Furthermore, based on the large genetic divergences found among the Brazilian salamander samples studied by them, these authors also suggest the existence of a species complex under this taxon name, stating the need of more detailed studies. Recently, Brcko et al (2013) analyzed the external morphological characteristics of 278 Bolitoglossa specimens and confirmed the presence of a species complex in the Brazilian Amazon, suggesting an increase of species from one to five ( B. caldwellae sp. nov., B. madeira sp.…”

“…Its 124 assigned species represent around 20% of the living caudate species (Sessions, 2008; Rovito et al , 2012; Frost, 2013; Brcko et al , 2013). Widespread over the American tropics, these salamanders are found from northeastern Mexico to the South American Rainforest, and Middle America is the most species-rich region (Parra-Olea et al , 2004).…”
