Lumber recovery of Douglas-fir from the Coast and Cascade Ranges of Oregon and Washington.

Abstract: This report summarizes the results of lumber recovery studies at four sawmills in western Oregon and western Washington; two dimension mills, one grade mill, and one timber mill were included. Results from individual mills are reported and discussed. The four mills were also combined to approximate "average" conversion of logs to lumber for the region. Recovery information is presented by diameter and log grade for lumber volume, lumber grade, and lumber and log value.

“…volume of long logs was based on best available information from mill utilization studies conducted by the Production of Goods and Services unit at the Pacific Northwest Research Station in Portland, Oregon, USA. Utilization of Douglas-fir was modeled on long-log equations for unmanaged stands developed by Willits and Fahey ( 1988). We based utilization of western hemlock and true fir species on regressions developed by S. Willits (personal communication) from a composite of western Oregon and Washington mill studies for western hemlock and true fir logs.…”

“…Lumber Recovery 1988, Fahey 1983, Parry et al 1996, Willits and Fahey 1988, but in this case regressions for rough green CRP on diameter were nonsignifi cant for both Douglas-fi r (p = 0.24) and ponderosa pine (p = 0.53). This was probably because of the small sample size and narrow log SED range (3.5 to 9 inches in Douglas-fi r and 3.0 to 8 inches in ponderosa pine).…”
