Lung Sarcomatoid Carcinoma Metastasis to Skin: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Abstract: Sarcomatoid carcinoma is a biphasic neoplasm composed of highly complex, intimately admixed malignant epithelial and mesenchymal elements. We herein report a rare case of cutaneous metastasis of pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma that contains liposarcomatous, rhabdosarcomatous and chondrosarcomatous heterologous differentiation, and review relevant literatures to lead to a better understanding of this rare but highly aggressive tumor.

“…However, there are several limitations in this retrospective study that should be acknowledged. First, though the common metastatic sites included in the SEER database were the bone, brain, liver and lung, metastases in the heart (28,29), duodenum (30), gingiva (31), and skin (32)(33)(34) have been reported, but not included in the SEER database, thereby underestimating the sample size in this study. Second, metastatic data retrieved from the SEER database were from 2010 to 2016, which may not provide sufficient follow-up time.…”

“…1 Uncommon metastatic sites includes gastrointestinal tract, 2 right ventricle, 3 mandibular gingiva, 4 tongue 5 and skin. 6 In this case, we found many unsuspected metastatic lesions by PET/CT, especially in the epiglottis. Epiglottis and ileum metastases are extremely rare so that we misjudge it as lymphoma or multiple primary cancers at first.…”

“…PSC can also metastasize to the upper lip and skin. However, the OS was generally low when PSC metastasized to these unusual organs (16,18,19). Surgery is the main therapeutic method for PSC, especially for early-stage diseases; most patients in our study underwent surgery (8,20,21).…”
