Magnetic and Transport Properties of Ba6Fe8S15 and BaFe2S3:  Magnetoresistance in a Spin-Glass-Like Fe(II) System

Abstract: The magnetic and transport properties of the Hong and Steinfink 1-dimensional barium iron sulfide phases BaFe 2 S 3 and Ba 6 Fe 8 S 15 were studied. The valence precise BaFe 2 S 3 phase (Fe 2+ ) is semiconducting with a nonmagnetic ground state due to strong intrachain antiferromagnetic coupling. However, short-range magnetic correlations and spin-glass-like behavior are found below 25 K, which gives rise to a magnetoresistive effect of 10% at 9 T. BaFe 2 S 3 is a rare example of a magnetoresistive ternary sul… Show more

“…Such CX-AFM order was also predicted to be the ground state of BaFe 2 S 3 , which was later also confirmed using neutron techniques [33]. Un-der ambient conditions, BaFe 2 S 3 has a semiconducting ground state with a very small gap about 0.06 − 0.07 eV [34,35]. The most striking recent experimental discovery is that high pressure can drive BaFe 2 S 3 to become superconducting when the hydrostatic pressure exceeds about 11 GPa [33] and its highest T c can reach 24 K at 13.5 GPa [36].…”

“…In this study, we investigated in detail the magnetic properties of a sulphur-analogue of the Fe-based ladder materials, BaFe 2 S 3 (space group: orthorhombic, Cmcm) 18,19 , and undertook experimental trials in which this compound was subjected to high pressures to obtain the metallic state. The electronic properties of this material depend on the manner in which the samples are synthesized, and thus we present data for sample 1 describing magnetic properties, and data for a range of samples 1 to 6 describing high-pressure effects.…”

“…It should be noted that the shorter Fe-Fe bond in BaFe 2 S 3 may also have some contribution to higher conductivity. On the other hand, when compared to BaFe 2 S 3 which exhibits negative magnetoresistance (MR) below 25 K, 16 there is no obvious MR in BaFe 2 Se 3 as shown in Fig. 3.…”
