Magnetic structure of EuFe2P2studied by neutron powder diffraction

Abstract: A neutron powder diffraction study of EuFe 2 P 2 at a wavelength of 2.3672(1)Å shows that the 6.6(3) μ B Eu 2+ moments order ferromagnetically at T C = 30(1) K and are canted at an angle of 17(3) • from the c axis. No evidence for the previously proposed antiferromagnetic or helimagnetic structures was found. The almost axial ferromagnetic structure of EuFe 2 P 2 contrasts sharply with the planar antiferromagnetism seen in EuFe 2 As 2 and many other europium-transition metal pnictides, suggesting a delicate in… Show more

“…When x >0.45, no sign of SC was detected, and the resistivity kinks reappear at T Eu M . As can be seen, T Eu M climbs with further P substitution, and arrives at 29 K for the end member EuFe 2 P 2 [31,32]. Figure 3 shows the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility of two representative samples.…”

“…But most of the information about the magnetic structure of Eu compounds has been quite often inferred only through single crystal magnetization measurements or Mössbauer spectroscopy on the isotope 151 Eu, like in EuPdSb 4 . In the last few years, however, neutron diffraction with thermal neutrons was successfully employed to unravel the magnetic structure of some intermetallic divalent Eu materials [10][11][12][13] . Of the two valences Eu 3+ and Eu 2+ , only the divalent, with a half-filled 4 f shell with L=0 and S=7/2, has an intrinsic magnetic moment of 7 µ B .…”
