Major Antifungals in Nutmeg Essential Oil against Aspergillus flavus and A. ochraceus

Abstract: Aiming to substitute toxic synthetic fungicides, the activity of nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) essential oil (EO, obtained by hydrodistillation) was investigated against two important storage fungi-Aspergillus flavus A. ochraceus. The activity of crude nutmeg EO was investigated using poison food assay (PFA). At a concentration of 0.1%, the EO inhibited A. flavus and A. ochraceus growth by 43 and 65%, respectively. At a concentration of 0.3 %, A. flavus and A. ochraceus inhibitions were 84 and 79%, respectively.… Show more

“…at m/z 162, C 10 H 10 O 2 (see table 1). The high concentration of eugenol in bark essential oil of Cinnamomun culilawan makes it potentially useful for the preparation of herbal and modern medicines because they exhibit antibacterial, antifungal, antiinflammatory, insecticidal and antioxidant activities [11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…While the phytochemical constituents of M. fragrans have been extensively studied for its antifungal effect [42,[44][45][46][47], the melanin inhibiting potential has not been studied till date. The present work aimed at evaluating the antifungal effect of M. fragrans extract as a melanin inhibitor against A. fumigatus.…”

“…As shown by AMMI results, these 2 latter compounds seem to have similar pattern with common locations and varieties involved in accumulation, suggesting a co-regulation mechanism in their accumulation. 6-methoxymellein is involved in partial resistance of carrot to diseases [69] and myristicin is recognized thanks to its anti-fungal activity [70]. In addition, myristicin seems to potentiate the action of phytoalexins as 6-methoxymellein in carrot root [71].…”
