Purpose Although R&D plays a crucial role in innovativeness and R&D expenditures is the most widely used tool to measure the level of innovativeness of companies, other variables and inputs may be equally interesting. The purpose of this paper is to define an innovative propensity index (IPI) which considers these variables and allows the identification of those companies which have a higher propensity to implement different types of innovativeness. Design/methodology/approach Taking into account, the different criteria that may be considered in an IPI and that the perception of the relative importance of each criterion is subjective, the use of an innovativeness multicriteria decision methodology has been considered appropriate. In particular, an IPI is built from the weighting of the criteria through FAHP methodology. Data mining techniques are subsequently used to establish a non-supervised ranking (clustering) of a sample of firms, considering their IPI values. Findings The application of an IPI to a sample of 1,639 companies operating in different industrial sectors has helped us to find out that this index is useful for identifying those companies which really show an increased innovative capacity. A comparative analysis by sectors has shown that although there are companies from all sectors with a high innovative propensity, the proportion increases in more technological sectors. Moreover, it has been observed that in companies with higher net personnel expenses and high productivity level the innovative propensity is also higher. Originality/value The criteria used to build the index affects innovativeness individually, but the value of the analysis lies in its multicriteria approach and use of fuzzy logic. The validation of the index in a wide sample of firms is another outstanding aspect of the analysis.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to describe the evaluation of a training programme in a Portuguese family’s small and medium enterprise (SME) in the cosmetics industry. This study addresses the four levels of the Kirkpatrick Model and estimates the return on investment (ROI) of a training programme in sales. Design/methodology/approach The study follows a case design to address the analysis of the training outcomes. This study uses data from 53 employees and explore the programme’s results. Findings This study provides evidence on the reactions of the trainees to the programme; the learning which results from it; and on the changes in trainees’ behaviours and the consequent results. This study also estimates the ROI of the programme; it is 5.55. Research limitations/implications The limitations to this study may be the use of data from a single training programme. Practical implications The research results offer managers some critical information in terms of future options in resource allocation. Training managers become more informed in making future choices on where to invest in training programmes. Originality/value The originality of the study regards the ROI estimation for an SME’s sales training programme. SMEs are not often addressed in the training evaluation literature. Because SMEs have limited organisational resources, and they do not invest much in training. Further, this estimation requires data gathering and reporting that is not commonly done, even for large firms.

Avalíase a situación da Formación Profesional en Galicia perante o desafío da aplicación das Estratexias de Especialización Intelixente lanzado pola Comisión Europea para as rexións e Estados Membros no período de programación 2014-2020. A implantación dunha estratexia deste tipo constitúe unha condición ex-ante imposta desde a Unión Europa para a percepción de Fondos Estruturais. A través da análise sistémica proposta trátase de identificar o estado actual da Formación Profesional, como parte do Sistema Galego de Innovación. Con ese fin analízanse os diferentes ámbitos e espazos nos que esta estratexia de innovación inflúe neste nivel educativo (novas orientacións, creación de capacidades, oferta educativa de admisión, difusión do coñecemento, tarefas técnicas, etc.), contrastando os obxectivos perseguidos e os resultados observados. Tamén se analizan aspectos institucionais e organizacionais que inciden no deseño, aplicación e xestión das medidas e a súa posible incidencia nos sistemas produtivo e educativo, para o que se pon a atención nos centros de referencia, os Centros Integrados de Formación Profesional. As conclusións extraídas permiten formular recomendacións para afondar na implantación da Estratexia de Especialización Intelixente na Formación Profesional na Comunidade Autónoma de cara ao período de programación 2021-2027.
