Mammals of Serra do Cipó National Park, southeastern Brazil

Abstract: The mammals of the Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna Biome) are still poorly known; only a few localities have been properly surveyed and studied. Hereby, we present a survey of the mammals of Serra do Cipó National Park, a protected area of Cerrado in Minas Gerais State, southeastern Brazil. A total of 55 species from eight orders were listed, which have been captured, observed or recorded in the literature. Some mammals are endemic or listed as threatened either by IUCN’s red list or by the national and regional re… Show more

A similar pattern represented by species shared with Atlantic Forest, Caatinga and Cerrado was observed in other studies carried on the Espinhaço Range (see Pereira & Geise 2007, 2009, Câmara & Oliveira 2012, Braga et al 2016 which is a contact zone between the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest to the south and a transition zone between the Cerrado, Atlantic Forest and Caatinga in the northern (Giulietti et al 1997).…”

“…This taxon is considered rare in scientific collections and seemingly rare in studies in all vegetation types of the Cerrado (Santos & Henriques 2010. In the Espinhaço Range, the only other known record of T. lasiotis is in a protected area in Parque Nacional da Serra do Cipó (Lessa et al 2008, Câmara & Oliveira 2012. The PERP small-sized mammalian fauna also presents interesting components, such as the didelphid M. incanus and the sympatry between G. microtarsus and G. agilis.…”

“…For example, Schneider et al (2000) recorded 59 species in the Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra (71,525 ha), Câmara et al (1999) recorded 34 species in the Áreas de Proteção Especial no Parque Estadual Serra do Rola-Moça (3,400 ha), this park being located within a metropolitan region, and Câmara and Oliveira (2012) recorded 55 species in the Parque Nacional da Serra do Cipó (33,800 ha).…”

“…Estima-se que quase um quarto das espécies de mamíferos, na maioria de médio e grande porte, está globalmente em perigo ou extinto, representando uma expressiva ameaça à biodiversidade de ecossistemas tropicais (Galetti & Dirzo 2013). No entanto, o conhecimento acerca destes processos de extinções só é possível através de informações biológicas básicas, como ocorrência e distribuição das espécies por meio de inventários (Tobler et al 2008, Câmara & Oliveira 2012.…”
