Mapping Green Product Spaces of Nations

Abstract: As countries transition to a green economy, they will need to identify profitable entry points in which they can favorably compete with other nations in emerging green markets. Identifying and building supply capacity for commercially viable, competitive green product exports can be seen as a fundamental part of supporting green growth and sustainable development. Building on the product space model initially advanced by Hidalgo and Hausmann in 2009, this article proposes a green product space methodology to m… Show more

“…Our gray growth measure is the RCA in the pollution-intensive products. Consistently, it is negatively (but not strongly) correlated with the RCA indices in the so-called clean products that is calculated using UN Comtrade (2020) data based on the green product classification of Hamwey et al (2013). This categorization considers waste management, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and environmental analysis.…”

“…This cluster is well connected with the light green cluster at the bottom-right of the diagram. These studies analyze how economic complexity affects environmental sustainability [6,8,9], such as the green product space [73]. In addition, this cluster is connected with studies on green product development [74], industrial symbiosis [62], technology spillovers, and water pollution [75].…”

“…For example, we found five new indicators among the studies analyzed, but all of them were from the economic complexity community. Three indicators (the Complex Index of Relative Development (CIRD) [86], the Product Gini Index (PGI) [54], and complexity and human development [70]) analyze social aspects, and two indicators (Green Product Space [73] and the Similarity Green Product index (SGP) [74]) analyze the sustainability aspect. The next analysis was based on studies that used at least one database (see Figure 8).…”

“…Green product space is one example of a conceptual approach that can be used to build such awareness and help guide industrial policy towards sustainable paths (Hamwey et al, 2013;Hidalgo et al, 2007). An illustration of a green product space map is plotted in figure 9.12, using real 2014 export data from Brazil.…”
