Mapping Productivity-related Spatial Characteristics in Rice-based Cropping Systems in Sri Lanka

Abstract: Accurate and timely information on the productivity-related spatial characteristics in paddy fields will facilitate accurate decision-making to achieve food security needs. The aim of the present study was to map rice-cultivating regions in Sri Lanka based on crop productivity and related agronomic decisions made. A grid-based map coupled with a paddy land map of the country was used for the sampling protocol, and the generated data were mapped using ArcGIS software. The study revealed the spatial heterogeneit… Show more

“…Out of the total number of grids (65,610), paddy cultivation locations were distributed only in 35,537 grids. All grids that contained more than 35% paddy locations (9000 grids) were selected as per the method used in previous studies [82,83]. A total of 936 paddy cultivation locations were selected using a Random Point Generator tool in ArcMap software and used as the paddy location points data set with geographic coordinates for this study.…”

“…Rice is widely cultivated in most Asian countries, including Sri Lanka, under a wide range of crop management and agro-climatic conditions [24][25]. It is reported that 81% of the soils tested (n=32) had Mg concentrations below the optimal range, indicating possible Mg deficiencies in paddy soils [26].…”

“…The livestock scale was vulnerable to feed production, which depended on climate and environmental conditions (Jaber et al, 2016;Karimi et al, 2018). Insufficient precipitation, shortage of water resources, and poor water infrastructure would reduce grassland productivity, which directly affects the feed price and impacts the cost of animal husbandry and its size (Sagynbekova, 2017;Chen et al, 2020;Umuhoza et al, 2021;Kadupitiya et al, 2022). Pastures with more precipitation benefit for grassland productivity in Kyrgyzstan (Wang et al, 2020), which could offer abundant and high-quality feed for livestock and greatly promote the development of animal husbandry.…”
