Mapping trajectories of becoming: four forms of behaviour in co-housing initiatives

Abstract: In order learn about planning in a world increasingly characterised by resource interdependencies and a plurality of governing agencies, this paper follows the processes of becoming for two co-housing initiatives. Self-organisation -understood as the emergence of actor-networks -is the leading theoretical concept, complemented by translation from actor-network theory and individuation from assemblage theory. This theoretical hybrid distinguishes four forms of behaviour (decoding, coding, expansion and contract… Show more

“…Formulating UGS MP in Jakarta is a process of joint planning with stakeholders from public, private, and civil actors, navigating through local conditions, law, institutions, and spatial planning (Boonstra, 2016). The actors in this research were defined as the stakeholders involved in producing information, analysis, opinions, problems, and challenges in formulating the UGS MP.…”

“…All the cases started in some form of self-organisation, which soon evolved into a more or less intentional activity that Gert de Roo (2018) calls self-governance and, in most cases, also into co-governance. Beitske Boonstra (2016) has redefined self-organisation as actor-relational networks that emerge from interactions between human and non-human actors. On the basis of two case studies on Danish cohousing, she proposes four types of behaviour visible in self-organisation processes.…”

“…The cases also revealed the importance of recognising the temporal dynamics of the varying stages of planning -whether temporary or sustained, repetitious or one-off. In fact, the dynamism of the central phenomenon of flat ontology -emergence or becoming (Boonstra 2016) -seems to require the approach of time planning.…”

“…This suggests that the transnational nature of the residents, their higher status and an accompanying desire for privacy means that the idea of community in such residential arrangements reflects a community of preferences and practice in terms of similar lifestyles rather than a community bounded by a sense of localized identity and shared purpose. This point is made clearer by Ruiu (2014) in a comparison between gated communities and cohousing communities which are formed by residents sharing similar goals and often participate in common work arrangements (see also Boonstra, 2016; Ruiu, 2016). Thus, the residential mix along with associated lifestyle pursuits and preferences enabled by the market exists in contrast to a state enabled residential environment with community amenities and organizations to foster a local community and national identity.…”
