Maternal conjugated linoleic acid supplementation reverses high-fat diet-induced skeletal muscle atrophy and inflammation in adult male rat offspring

Abstract: -A high-saturated-fat diet (HFD) during pregnancy and lactation leads to metabolic disorders in offspring concomitant with increased adiposity and a proinflammatory phenotype in later life. During the fetal period, the impact of maternal diet on skeletal muscle development is poorly described, despite this tissue exerting a major influence on life-long metabolic health. This study investigated the effect of a maternal HFD on skeletal muscle anabolic, catabolic, and inflammatory signaling in adult rat offspring… Show more

“…In previous studies, maternal obesity or obesogenic environment (e.g. high-fat diet) during pregnancy have been associated with reduced muscle mass [11,26], decreased myogenesis [13], lower protein content in muscle [27], and reduced muscle strength [12]. Moreover, maternal high-fat diet induces a 27% decrease in skeletal muscle precursor (SMP) cells [26].…”

“…Other mechanisms of CLA on increased lean body mass have also been suggested. First, maternal CLA supplementation reversed high‐fat diet‐induced skeletal muscle atrophy in adult male rat offspring through reduction of muscle wasting (Pileggi et al, ). In addition, CLA reduced muscle atrophy by modulating inflammatory responses, such as the reduction of proinflammatory markers, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) (Halade, Rahman, & Fernandes, ; Park et al, ) and transcription regulator nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) (Hommelberg et al, ).…”
