Maximising Skeletal Data Collection in Commercial Archaeology

Abstract: This paper explores the application of quick, simple and low-cost procedures for data collection in commercial-driven 'salvage' archaeology. In large-scale cemetery contexts, the collection of a meaningful data set is often under extreme time and cost constraints. This requires the application of tailored field techniques and interdisciplinary collaboration between archaeologists, anthropologists and developers in order to maximise results. The authors examine procedures recently utilised to document and prese… Show more

“…121 The Civil Code is based on the premise that the basic essence of the facts is the subjective obligation to compensate for damage. 122 There are several special characteristics of the facts connected to the environment: damage resulting from operating activities, damage caused by a particularly hazardous operation, damage to an immovable thing (which also affects the damage to the environment and its components), and damage caused by the operation of a means of transport. Compensation in kind (restoration to the original state) is a priority.…”

“…Základem byl celkový kolmý snímek a dále snímky detailů, především kloubních spojení, případně zdravotních anomálií či uložení přítomných artefaktů. Následovalo vyplnění terénního protokolu (Průchová -Chroustovský -Kacl 2017). Popis nálezové situace (poloha, dekubitus a orientace ke světovým stranám) a údaje o polohových změnách kostí jsou podkladem pro tafonomické vyhodnocení a následnou rekonstrukci pohřebního ritu.…”

“…V českém prostředí byl hřbitov náležející k vojenskému lazaretu zkoumán v rámci předstihového záchranného archeologického výzkumu v Praze 8 -Karlíně v ul. Pernerova a Korybutova (u Invalidovny) v roce 2013 společností Archeo Pro, o. p. s. Celý průběh terénního výzkumu byl koncipován jako archeologicko-antropologický projekt za účasti biologických antropologů Průchová -Chroustovský -Kacl 2017). Vojenský hřbitov zde začal fungovat zřejmě již někdy kolem roku 1735 a v roce 1894 byl oficiálně zrušen (Michálková -Michálek 2008, 63-87).…”

“…Human osteoarchaeological (skeletal) remains (HSR)-which comprise bones and teeth-are of particular importance in archaeology 24,25 , even if they have gone through various transformations after the death of the organism 24,[26][27][28] , as those elements are the main source of biological information directly related to a past individual. Osteoarchaeologists have used HSR to understand the origins and spread of disease 17,29 , funerary practices [30][31][32] , human identities 33 , mobility 34,35 , and evolution 36 , among other themes.…”
