Mean Platelet Volume may be Elevated in Mitral Valve Prolapse and Associated With the Severity of Prolapse

Abstract: Thromboembolic events can be seen in patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP). It is unclear whether platelet activation may contribute to these events in patients with MVP. Thus, we aimed to evaluate mean platelet volume (MPV) in patients with MVP and its association with the severity of MVP. This study included 312 patients with MVP and 240 control participants. Mean platelet volume was significantly higher in patients with MVP than in controls (8.9 ± 0.7 vs 7.9 ± 0.6 fL, P = .001). In linear regression ana… Show more

“…Two decades ago, platelet activity was studied among patients with MVP by Walsh et al, and they observed platelet hyperactivity compared to a control group, suggesting the platelets may play a vital role in the pathogenesis of thromboembolisms in MVP[ 7 ]. This notion was buttressed by Icli et al, whose findings showed that the mean platelet volume is elevated in MVP patients and is more reactive[ 8 ]. Those studies indicated that MVP patients are particularly vulnerable to certain thromboembolic events which can consequently endanger oxygen-sensitive organs, such as the retina, brain, and cochlea.…”

“…On the other hand, it was reported that MPV levels may be associated with postoperative adverse events [25]. In a study by Icli et al [26], MPV was significantly higher in patients with mitral valve prolapsus.…”

“…Previous studies have reported the association of MPV with cardiovascular diseases and heart valve diseases [13][14][15][16]. Recently, in a study by Icli et al [17], high levels of MPV were determined in mitral valve prolapse. In our study, as distinct from the previous ones, MPV values were evaluated according to the presence of atrial fibrillation and left atrial appendage thrombus in patients with mitral regurgitation, and compared with its severity.…”

“…Increased MPV levels in thromboembolism are well known [10][11][12]. Apart from this, the association of MPV with heart valve diseases has been shown in the recent studies [15][16][17].
