Microbial production of acetoin is eco-friendly and inexpensive when compared with its synthetic methods of production. In the present findings, bioproduction of acetoin in a typical bioreactor was discussed with a view to ascertain the seemingly comparative advantage of bioreactor system over shake flask, and more importantly, to confirm that corn steep liquor can indeed adequately be used as a replacement for other organic nitrogen sources. Taguchi design was statistically used to optimized the fermentation process which resulted in a 3-fold increase in molar yield (83%) corresponding to a six-fold increase in acetoin concentration (63.43 g/L), as compared to a similar study conducted in a shake flask. Although agitation rate was observed to be the most controlling, the bioreactor may underperform at agitation rate greater than 300 rpm. The optimum parameters for acetoin production in this study were 300 rpm agitation, 1.5 slpm aeration, 2 days fermentation time, and pH 6.5. The results show that the commercial production of acetoin can be envisioned using a biological approach that may be of economic advantage.

Laminarin is a kind of polysaccharide extracted from kelp, which has immunomodulatory, anti-tumor, hypoglycemic, and antioxidation effects. Laminarin extraction from kelp and encapsulation with polymers in supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO 2 ) are a green and efficient process. The solubilities of laminarin in ScCO 2 are one of basic parameters in the process. By using the method of dynamic and static combination, the solubilities of laminarin in ScCO 2 with or without the ethanol as a cosolvent were measured under the temperatures of 308.15, 313.15, and 318.15 K and the pressures from 10.0 to 16.0 MPa. The effects of the operating parameters including the pressure, temperature, and content of a cosolvent on the solubility of laminarin in ScCO 2 were investigated experimentally. The solubilities obtained from the experiments were correlated by using Chrastil, Meńdez-Santiago Teja (M-S T), Del Valle and Aguilera (D-A), Bartle, Thakur-Gupta (T-G), and M-Mendez-Santiago-Teja-Thakur-G (M-MST-TG) models, respectively. The results showed that the calculated values by the models fitted were in good agreement with the experimental ones. The average absolute relative deviations (AARD (%)) without a cosolvent were 4.

The separation performances, in terms of adsorption selectivity, desorption, and regeneration of an innovative hyper-cross-linked resin (HD-02) for recovery of acetoin from the ethanol−acetoin−acetic acid ternary mixture were explored in this work. The competitive adsorption behaviors of the ternary mixture were determined experimentally. The results showed the HD-02 resin had a good adsorption selectivity toward acetoin over acetic acid and ethanol. Subsequently, the desorption behaviors in terms of desorption isotherms and kinetics were systematically investigated. Using ethanol as a desorbent, the recovery could be achieved as high as 98% in the batch desorption experiments. The Fick model was adopted to simulate the desorption process. The simulation results revealed that the intraparticle diffusion was the rate-limiting step and the obtained effective diffusivities (1.530 × 10 −9 m 2 /min) were independent of the acetoin concentrations. In the end of this work, three cycles of adsorption−desorption−regeneration operations confirmed good reproducibility of the resin for the attainment of acetoin.
