A surprisingly large asymmetry between the up and down sea quark distributions in the nucleon has been observed in recent deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan experiments. This result strongly suggests that the mesonic degrees of freedom play an important role in the description of the parton distributions of the hadronic sea. In this article, we review the current status of our knowledge of the flavor structure of the nucleon sea. The implications of various theoretical models as well as possible future measurements are also discussed.

Light front formalism for composite systems is presented. Derivation of equations for bound state and scattering problems are given. Methods of constructing of elastic form factors and scattering amplitudes of composite particles are reviewed. Elastic form factors in the impulse approximation are calculated. Scattering amplitudes for relativistic bound states are constructed. Some model cases for transition amplitudes are considered. Deep inelastic form factors (structure functions) are expressed through light front wave functions. It is shown that taking into account of transverse motion of partons leads to the violation of Bjorken scaling and structure functions become square of transverse momentum dependent. Possible explanation of the EMC-effect is given. Problem of light front relativization of wave functions of lightest nuclei is considered. Scaling properties of deuteron, 3 He and 4 He light front wave functions are checked in a rather wide energy range.

Inelastic scattering of cosmic ray muons on iron nuclei and the virtual photon shadowing

Hadronic cascade showers originating from inelastic interactions of cosmic ray muons with iron nuclei have been observed in a calorimeter located between two magnetic spectrometers. The separation of those events from the electromagnetic showers has been successfully done in the ranges of the transferred energy v ≳ 50 GeV and its ratio to muon energy v/E ≳ 0,1, by utilizing the difference of their longitudinal cascade developments. The comparison of the obtained μ‐Fe cross section with available μ‐, e‐ and σ‐proton data as well as μ‐, e‐ and σ‐nucleus data indicates that; At v ˜ 100 GeV, the virtual photon cross section on iron nucleus is almost the same as the real photon one, at least Q2 ≳ 0.1 GeV2/c2, and is about 70% of the cross section on proton times the atomic mass number of iron, i.e. the shadowing effect is clearly seen. Up to TeV region, this virtual photon cross section on iron does not increase significantly. contrary to the tendency of the real photon cross section on proton around 100 GeV. This suggests most likely that the shadowing still increases with energy at such high energies.
