Measures for textual patent similarities: a guided way to select appropriate approaches

Abstract: The measurement of textual patent similarities is crucial for important tasks in patent management, be it prior art analysis, infringement analysis, or patent mapping. In this paper the common theory of similarity measurement is applied to the field of patents, using solitary concepts as basic textual elements of patents. After unfolding the term 'similarity' in a content and formal oriented level and presenting a basic model of understanding, a segmented approach to the measurement of underlying variables, si… Show more

“…The technological similarity between two patents can be calculated by using similarity coefficient such as Sorensen coefficient, Jaccard coefficient, cosine coefficient, and inclusion coefficient (Moehrle 2010). This paper simply adopted Sorensen coefficient and Here, N(X) and N(Y) were the number of SAO structures in patent X and Y, and N(X,Y) is the number of semantically identical SAO structures.…”

“…In this context, we focused on new aspects of the fourโ€wheel drive train. As patent analysis is a demanding task, we applied semantic patent analysis to obtain insights into the patent landscape and to gain orientation in the field of fourโ€wheel drive technology (see Gerken et al., ; Moehrle, ; Gerken and Moehrle, ; Moehrle and Gerken, ). Next, the first occurrence of each technology in patent literature was identified. For this purpose, we investigated the international publication date of the patents corresponding to SUBARU's technologies.…”

“…These technical terms are extracted from the abstract fields with special attention to growth in frequency. Additionally, calculating textual similarity based on shared terms goes deeper, which is also related to strong citation links and prior art analysis, infringement analysis, or patent mapping (Moehrle 2010). Some research indicates that the overall relationship among patents provides richer information and thus enables deeper analyses, since it takes more diverse keywords into account (B.…”
