Measuring species diversity in the tropics: a review of methodological approaches and framework for future studies

Abstract: The analysis of species diversity has benefited from multiple methodological approaches that are changing not only the way we measure biodiversity, but also our general conceptualization of it. We review the concepts and methods for measuring species diversity, including a report on how species diversity has been measured in tropical ecosystems, and summarize current methodological approaches that can be used to achieve more comprehensive analyses of species diversity. We reviewed papers dealing with species d… Show more

“…The diversity of rural households' livelihoods can be calculated through the Shannon Weir Index of the various livelihood income sources of the households. The index is a commonly used diversity index to describe biodiversity in ecosystems in ecology study [31]. This index considers not only the number of livelihood strategy types that household members engaged in, but also the evenness of income from adopted strategy types.…”

“…Thus, we determined the assemblage of waterbirds, based on the species and guild diversity according to their diet and foraging behaviour. Nowadays, it is essential to quantify diversity in order to develop integrated management plans and make decisions in favour of the conservation of waterbirds and their habitats (Ma et al 2010;Moreno et al 2018).…”
