Mechanical and tribological behaviours of aluminium hybrid composites reinforced by CDA-B4C

Abstract: This study focuses on fabricating aluminium hybrid metal matrix composites reinforced with ecofriendly agro waste, cow dung ash and boron carbide by two stage stir casting. Weight percentage of cow dung ash and boron carbide were added in ratios of 2.5:7.5, 5:5, and 7.5:2.5. The effects on mechanical properties like hardness, tensile strength, impact strength, flexural strength and wear behaviour were studied. SEM and EDX analysis were employed to study the fracture mechanism for tensile, impact and wear speci… Show more

“…Thermal mismatch creates the thermal stresses in the composites and dislocation formation at the interface occurs; therefore, elastic deformation decreases. 39 Figure 13(e) reveals the presence of cracks, voids and dimples in composite with maximum weight percent of B 4 C. Clustering of reinforcement particles and the presence of cracks and voids due to porosity promotes the early failure and are responsible for the degradation of tensile strength in case of the composite sample B4.…”

“…Boron carbide was also used for cow dung ash (CDA) reinforced aluminum composites, as shown in Manikandan and Arjunan [ 3 ]. Both additives were used in weight percentages of 0–7.5 wt %.…”

“…The addition of at least two reinforcements and thus the production of a hybrid composite is intended to enhance the mechanical and tribological properties compared to the materials reinforced with a single type of filler. The main disadvantage of this type of composites is often a reduction in ductility and an increase in brittleness of the composite [ 3 ]. On the other hand, many researchers primarily use polymer matrices to create composites reinforced with waste materials.…”

“…Manikandan and Arjunan 9 studied the wear behaviour of (Al/B 4 C/CDA) hybrid composite and stated that the co-efficient of friction decreased due to the presence of B 4 C and cow dunk ash (CDA). During wear, the soft CDA elements act as a solid lubricant which can reduce the coefficient of friction (COF).…”
