These results are comparable to the other studies using the traditional method of isometric tension measurement of smooth muscle strips in inflammatory diseases, 17,37–39 indicating that myoelectric activity of SO associated with Ca 2+ mobilization was impaired by chronic cholangitis. In comparison with isometric tension measurement in which only part of smooth muscle cells in the SO were detected, however, myoelectric activities recorded by circular electrode represent the myoelectrical activity of all smooth muscle cells in an integrated SO, which is better than isometric tension to reflect the functional status of entire SO.…”

The muscle cell defect appears to be specific for this condition and not for gallbladder disease with cholesterol gallstones.…”
