Medium Speed Engine Crankshaft Analysis

Abstract: Summary. This article describes the overview of crankshaft analysis of a medium speed diesel engine. Crankshaft analysis includes static analysis, crankshaft dynamics, bearing analysis, gear analysis, and stress & fatigue analysis, the latter being in main focus in this article. AVL Excite Power unit is used for multibody dynamics and Abaqus for finite element analysis.

“…AVL EXCITE has been used to simulate the rig structure's dynamic behavior and the bearing's EHD performance thanks to its capability of fully coupling hydrodynamics with multi-body system dynamics [1,2,3,5,6]. Figure 2 compares the rig structure deformation and bearing oil film thickness between the flexible structure and the rigid structure.…”

“…Sequential D-optimal design has been used in this work for choosing the next test level. This way the amount of information from tests is maximized and the precision of further analyses [14,5,9] increases in the product design process [7]. Bayesian statistics is seen as a natural tool for this kind of problem providing an easy way of introducing engineering prior knowledge and uncertainty to the mathematical model (see Model section for more).…”
