“…On the other hand, Levan (1940) in Allium amplectens, Vig and Mehrotra (1965) in Allium odorum and Seetharam et al (1975) in Eleusine coracana concluded that the high frequency of univalents at metaphase I is due to the absolute failure of pairing. In addition to genetic control of synapsis, desynapsis is known to occur due to many other factors, such as drastic temperature fluctuations (Wilson 1959, Utkhede andJain 1974), ageing, reduced water content or ionizing radiations (Singh et al 1977). Colchicine effects followed by genetic control seem responsible for bringing about desynapsis in the present case.…”
