Universal-Diverse Orientation Promotes Congruent Ethnic and National Identities: A Preliminary Research Note

The present study conceptualizes “Unity in Diversity” as a condition in which individuals’ ethnic and national identities are congruent. This condition is achievable by internalizing universal-diverse orientation. The authors provide support for this idea through a cross-sectional survey (N = 400), and observed a positive relationship between individuals’ ethnic and national identities among individuals with high universal-diverse orientation. Such a relationship was absent among individuals with low universal-diverse orientation. Based on the results, the authors recommend socializing universal-diverse orientation to promote a sense of “Unity in Diversity” among individuals within a multicultural society, such as that of Indonesia. Studi ini mengonseptualisasi “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” sebagai kondisi ketika terdapat keselarasan identitas suku bangsa dan nasional seorang individu. Kondisi ini bisa dicapai melalui internalisasi universal-diverse orientation. Penulis menyediakan data yang mendukung konsep ini melalui survei cross-sectional (N = 400), dan menemukan hubungan positif antara identitas suku bangsa dan identitas nasional pada individu dengan universal-diverse orientation tinggi. Hubungan ini tidak ditemukan pada individu dengan universal-diverse orientation rendah. Berdasarkan temuan ini, penulis merekomendasikan upaya sosialisasi universal-diverse orientation untuk menguatkan rasa “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” pada individu dalam masyarakat multikultur layaknya Indonesia.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan strategi adaptasi siswa suku bangsa Jawa di lingkungan sekolah SMAN 1 Koto Baru, Kabupaten Dharmasraya. Penelitian ini penting dilakukan karena proses penyesuaian sangat perlu dilakukan saat memasuki lingkungan budaya yang berbeda. Siswa suku bangsa Jawa di lingkungan sekolah merupakan siswa pendatang (transmigrasi) dengan jumlah minoritas di lingkungan sekolah. Maka dari itu, dengan jumlah siswa suku bangsa Jawa yang minoritas di lingkungan sekolah perlunya penyesuaian agar terjadinya pembauran. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu teori adaptasi dari Jhon Bennett. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan penelitian kualitatif dengan tipe studi kasus. Teknik pemilihan informan yang digunakan adalah purposive sampling dengan 30 orang informan diantaranya 24 orang siswa suku bangsa Jawa, 4 orang siswa suku bangsa Minang, 1 orang kepala sekolah, dan 1 orang guru sosiologi. Teknik pengumpulan data yang dilakukan melalui observasi, teknik wawancara mendalam, serta studi dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini ada empat tahap analisis yaitu, pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi yang dilakukan siswa suku bangsa Jawa di lingkungan sekolah bertahap sampai mereka terbiasa dengan adanya perbedaan. Strategi tersebut di antaranya yaitu pertama, gaya komunikasi karena perbedaan bahasa mengeharuskan siswa suku bangsa Jawa memahami dan menyesuaikan dengan bahasa Minang. Kedua, cara berteman siswa suku bangsa Jawa. Strategi dari cara berteman dilakukan karena siswa suku bangsa Jawa bersifat minoritas. Ketiga, adaptasi tingkah laku karena adanya perbedaan tingkah laku yang mencolok dituntut untuk lebih aktif dalam bersikap.

Abstract The factual condition illustrates that the condition of the Indonesian people is increasingly critical. This incident was triggered by various unresolved social problems. Social problems are a scourge of shared homework, especially teachers and the community. A multicultural approach integrated with Social Sciences (IPS). Educational learning offers an alternative through the application of diversity-based educational strategies and concepts in the Community. This paper aims to describe theoretically how to integrate multicultural approaches and social studies. So, the portion of multicultural education and social studies is able to equip students with sensitivity in dealing with social symptoms and problems that are rooted in differences. These differences such as ethnicity, race, religion, and values that occur in the community environment for the cultivation of unity. Therefore, this substance and learning model will be able to focus learning on appreciating cultural diversity in the 21st century era.
