“…I finally end up asking myself why I studied so much for nothing, if at the end of the day they're only willing to give me unskilled work… I'm absolutely livid!" 6 Unemployment is often associated with "social death" and shame. Djamel, who is 28 years old and who has a Master's degree in information technology, evokes these phenomena when recalling his long period of unemployment: "For me, unemployment, especially when you've got a university degree, is a kind of waste, a social death.…”

“…Other examples include the Comité national des diplômés chômeurs (CNDC) in Algeria, the Union des diplômés chômeurs in Tunisia, and the Association mauritanienne des diplômés chômeurs (AMDC) in Mauritania. The very creation of these associations demonstrates the extent to which unemployment has become an omnipresent motive for protest throughout the Maghreb region [6] [7]. A forum for the fight against unemployment and precarious work was to be organized in Algiers in February 2013, to coordinate collective action at the regional level and the mobilization of young unemployed graduates in the Maghreb.…”

“…In the context of the changes of 2011, Algeria has been an exception in North Africa (Baamara, 2012;Martinez and Boserup, 2016;Del Panta, 2017;Mañé et al, 2017), however 2019 has shown that this was only an apparent stability (Serres, 2019). Elected consistently since 1999, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, born in 1937, was Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1963 and 1979.…”

“…In 2011, the division of the parties of the official opposition, the clientelist distribution of hydrocarbon revenues, 6 the announcement by the presidency of a series of reforms and elections, as well as the repression of the first displays of discontent, and the still fresh memory of the violence during the black decade (1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999) made it difficult to form a unified protest movement (Baamara, 2012). Also influential was the still vivid memory of the revolt of October 1988, which, while it opened a period of three years of political liberalisation, ended up polarising society and leading to the violence of the black decade (1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999) (Desrues and Velasco, 2015).…”

“…En enero de 2011, los tumultos que se produjeron en distintas localidades asombraron a la opinión pública debido a la extrema violencia que padecieron los jóvenes manifestantes por parte de las fuerzas del orden (Baamara, 2012). Ante estos desbordamientos, el 21 de enero de 2011 se constituye una Coordinación Nacional por el Cambio y la Democracia (CNDC) que reúne una coalición heterogénea de partidos políticos de la oposición y de actores asociativos con distintos grados de arraigo histórico.…”
