Mesoscale ionospheric electrodynamics of omega bands determined from ground-based electromagnetic and satellite optical observations

Abstract: Abstract. We present ground-based electromagnetic data from the MIRACLE and BEAR networks and satellite optical observations from the UVI and PIXIE instruments on the Polar satellite of an omega band event over Northern Scandinavia on 26 June 1998, which occured close to the morning side edge of a substorm auroral bulge. Our analysis of the data concentrates on one omega band period from 03:18-03:27 UT, for which we use the method of characteristics combined with an analysis of the UVI and PIXIE data to derive… Show more

“…In particular, the meso-scale distribution of FAC has been shown to be strongly dominated by conductivity gradients (e.g. Amm et al, 2005). With that in mind, however, the clear agreement between auroral enhancements and changes in the vorticity is quite remarkable and must strongly imply a relationship with the FAC.…”

“…As examples, we discuss these conditions here for two typical cases in which 1-D methods are used: Magnetic field data from the overpass of a single low-orbiting satellite, and a from a magnetometer chain on the ground. Below, the Amm et al (2005) term "null gradient direction" corresponds to the direction in which the derivatives are (approximately) vanishing, and the term "1-D direction" to the direction perpendicular to this.…”

“…The J eq -based method of characteristics has been applied in numerous studies, out of which we only show here one example, result from the analysis of an omega band passage over the MIRACLE network by Amm et al (2005). The STARE radar measured the ionospheric electric field and the IMAGE magnetometer network the ground magnetic field (both being part of the MIRACLE network).…”

“…More uncertainties arise if the merged STARE velocity is converted to the ionospheric electric field and used in quantitative estimates (e.g. by Amm et al, 2005). The STARE merged vector magnitudes in the EISCAT flux tube (Uspensky et al, 2004) underestimate the E×B electron drift velocities by a factor ∼0.55.…”
