“…After cutaneous administration of DMSO_35S to man, DMSO disap peared from the blood in 30-48 hours. Serum DMS02 reached peak values after 36-72 hours and had disappeared after 312 hours (32,35). Denko et al (36) believe that the sulfur atom in DMSO follows the same metabolic pathways as organic sulfur.…”

“…Examination of 24-hour urine collections after intraperitoneal in jections of DMSO_35S to rats disclosed a recovery of 12.8% as dimethyl sulfone (29 ). In man, dermal administration of DMSO_35S showed that all the DMSO had been excreted within 48 hours while DMS02, first noted 8 hours after treatment, continued to be excreted for 480 hours (32,35). A total of 13% of the dose appeared in the urine as DMSO and about 18% as DMS02• Following oral administration, the urine recovery of DMSO was 50.8% and 22% for DMS02• Kolb et al (26,27) recovered 80% of the orig inal dose of DMSO within 8 days after intravenous administration to man but only 50% over a 10-15-day period after cutaneous application.…”

“…Early pharmacokinetic studies showed that *64% of [ 35 S]Me 2 SO 2 (21 mg/kg) was excreted within 24 h upon intraperitoneal administration to rats [236]. In a more recent study, the distribution of Me 2 SO 2 administered orally for 7 days using a 35 S radioisotope tracer found that [ 35 S] Me 2 SO 2 (470 mg/kg/day) was excreted in urine (*70%) and feces (*10%) [237].…”

“…It is also reported as an oxidation product of dimethylsulfoxide in the rat, rabbit and humans (Williams et al 1965(Williams et al , 1966Hucker et al 1966;Egorin et al 1998). Dimethylsulfone has been reported as an intermediate in the degradation of dimethylsulfide by Acinetobacter (Horinouchi et al 1997) and of dimethylsulfoxide [(CH 3 ) 2 SO] by Rhodococcus (Kayser et al 1993;Omori et al 1995).…”
