Method and physical mechanism of initialization-free phase-change optical recording

Abstract: A new method of initialization-free phase-change (PC) optical recording was proposed based on the crystallization kinetics of PC media. It was suggested that two special additional layers could be added to the disk to form a new disk structure for the initialization-free function. The physical mechanism of initialization-free PC optical recording was discussed. A model was proposed to explain the initialization-free method which combined the surface crystallization induced by the additional layer and the tempe… Show more

“…To avoid this bottleneck, shorten the production time and reduce the product cost in the production line, an initialization-free method for phase-change optical discs was proposed and the physical mechanism was discussed. 5) ''Initialization-free disc'' means that the as-deposited disc is in the crystalline state because the phase-change recording layer has already been crystallized during sputtering. In our previous work, 6,7) we demonstrated an initialization-free DVD rewritable disc (DVD-RAM) and an initialization-free Blu-ray disc.…”

“…This has been suggested to induce the crystallization of the phase-change recording layer in combination with a temperature change during sputtering. 5) Compared with a conventional Blu-ray disc, an initialization-free Blu-ray disc has two more layers, which significantly changes the optical and thermal properties. The computer simulation and disc design of the initialization-free Blu-ray disc were carried out using our in-house phasechange optical disc design (PCODD) software.…”

“…To shorten production time and reduce product cost in the production line, an initialization-free method of producing a phase-change optical disc and the physical mechanism for this method were proposed. 4) The ''initialization-free'' disc means that the as-deposited disc is in the crystalline state because the phase-change recording layer in this disc has already been crystallized during the sputtering process. Initialization-free DVD-random access memory (DVD-RAM) optical discs and NBLE phase-change discs have already been reported.…”

“…This has been suggested to induce the crystallization of the phase-change recording layer in combination with a temperature change during the sputtering process. 4) The NBLE phase-change disc structure is different from above initialization-free disc structure and it includes a Sb film to partially separate the AVIST phasechange recording layer. 6) Compared with a conventional Blu-ray Disc, an initialization-free Blu-ray Disc has two more layers, which significantly changes the optical and thermal properties.…”
