Abstract:Competitive adsorption of Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ and Zn 2+ ions on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in binary mixtures were investigated compared with non-competitive adsorption in the unitary metal solution in micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration at a temperature of 25 • C. Mutual interference effects were investigated based on the removal rate, the Langmuir Competitive Model (LCM) and equilibrium adsorption capacity ratios, q e /q m , which indicated the presence of other metal ions. The results indicated that the removal rate and adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ were higher than that of the other metal ions in unitary and binary systems. The effects on SDS micelles for Cd-Pb and Zn-Pb combinations were found to be antagonistic. However, it was a favorable effect for the Cd-Zn combination, and the metal ions sorption followed the order: Pb 2+ > Cd 2+ > Zn 2+ . The behavior of non-competitive and competitive adsorption for Cd 2+ and Zn 2+ in a single system and in the presence of Pb 2+ were well described by LCM. Moreover, the LCM showed poor fitting to non-competitive and competitive adsorption of Pb 2+ in a single solution and in the presence of Cd 2+ or Zn 2+ . In conclusion, the removal of Pb 2+ in the presence of Zn 2+ or Cd 2+ showed greater efficacy than that of Cd 2+ or Zn 2+ in the presence of Pb 2+ .

Fly ash (FA) is a major industrial waste generated from power stations that add extra cost for proper disposal. Recent research efforts have consequently focused on developing ways to make use of FA in environmentally sound applications. This study, therefore, investigates the potential ability of raw fly ash (RFA) and polyelectrolyte-coated fly ash (PEFA) to remove cadmium (Cd) from polluted water. Using layer-by-layer approach, functionalized fly ash was coated with 20 layers from 0.03% (v/v) of cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and anionic polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) solutions. Both surface morphology and chemical composition of the adsorbent (PEFA) were characterized using Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR), and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) techniques. The effects of pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial contaminant concentration, and mixing rate of the adsorption of Cd were also studied in batch mode experiments. Results of the study revealed that a 4.0 g/L dosage of PEFA removed around 99% of 2.0 mg/L of Cd in 15 min at 150 rpm compared to only 27% Cd removal achieved by RFA under the same conditions. Results also showed that adsorption by PEFA followed both Langmuir and Freundlich models with correlation coefficients of 98% and 99%, respectively.

Our work is focused on facile synthesis and modification of amylopectin‐grafted block copolymers by using reversible addition−fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique. This technique yields polymers with controlled molecular weight and low polydispersity indexes and is feasible with a wide range of monomers. Five different grades of amylopectin‐grafted polymethacrylic acid and polyacrylamide block copolymers have been synthesized via RAFT, by varying the amount of acrylamide employing amylopectin‐based macro chain transfer agent. Graft copolymers have been upgraded as smart responsive graft copolymers, through the incorporation of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) via condensation reaction. The polymeric materials have been extensively characterized by energy‐dispersive X‐ray analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X‐ray diffraction analysis. Normal and responsive graft copolymers have been studied for removal of model contaminant (kaolin), and responsive graft copolymers have been used to remove methylene blue dye (without using any adsorbent) from water by applying external magnetic field. The upgraded block copolymers have shown best performance in wastewater treatment.
