MicroRNA-140-5p inhibits cell proliferation and invasion by regulating VEGFA/MMP2 signaling in glioma

Abstract: Glioma is the most common primary malignant tumor of the central nervous system, which results in both a poor prognosis and outcome because of the aggressive progression of disease, growth and resistance to surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. MiR-140-5p is a small, non-coding single-stranded RNA molecule, which was previously studied in the settings of human tongue cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and colorectal cancer. However, detailed data that formally demonstrate the contribution of miR-140-5p to gl… Show more

“…Glioma usually exhibits a series of malignant features, including extensive, rapid and aggressive progression, resistance to surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, all of which lead to the poor prognosis for most patients 3. Although extensive efforts have been made to improve glioma treatment, average survival time of the patients remains 11‐15 months 4.…”

“…As a key angiogenic factor, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF, also called VEGFA) originally isolated from tumor cells, is involved in glioma cell proliferation, angiogenesis and metastasis. Furthermore, VEGFA exerts its oncogene function may partly through its ability to promote angiogenesis . Although, angiogenesis has been shown to be important in the tumorigenesis and progression of glioma, the effects of angiogenesis on the treatment of tumors are still debated .…”

“…Furthermore, VEGFA exerts its oncogene function may partly through its ability to promote angiogenesis. [11][12][13][14] Although, angiogenesis has been shown to be important in the tumorigenesis and progression of glioma, the effects of angiogenesis on the treatment of tumors are still debated. [15][16][17][18] The multiple functions of VEGFA in the tumorigenesis of glioma need a better understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms for glioma treatment.…”

“…Dysregulation of miRNAs has been reported in almost all types of malignancy, including glioma (11), gastric cancer (12), lung cancer (13), ovarian cancer (14) and bladder cancer (15). miRNAs are involved in tumourigenesis and tumour development through participation in the regulation of diverse biological processes, including cell proliferation, cycle, apoptosis, angiogenesis, migration, invasion, metastasis and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (16)(17)(18). Therefore, further investigation into the biological role of GBM-associated miRNAs may aid the identification of novel therapeutic approaches for patients with this disease.…”
