Signalized intersections are major sources of traffic delay and collision within the modern transportation system. Conventional signal optimization has revealed its limitation in improving the mobility and safety of an intersection. Unconventional arterial intersection designs (UAIDs) are able to improve the performance of an intersection by reducing phases of a signal cycle. Furthermore, they can fundamentally alter the number and the nature of the conflicting points. However, the drivers confusion, as a result of the unconventional geometric designs, remains one of the major barriers for the widespread adoption of UAIDs. Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) technology has the potential to overcome this barrier by eliminating the drivers confusion of a UAID. Therefore, UAIDs can play a significant role in transportation networks in the near future. In this paper, we surveyed UAID studies and implementations. In addition, we present an overview of intersection control schemes with the emergence of CAV and highlight the opportunity rises for UAID with the CAV technology. It is believed that the benefits gained from deploying UAIDs in conjunction with CAV are significant during the initial rollout of CAV under low market penetration.

In developing countries with heterogeneous traffic, such as Sri Lanka, it is possible to observe severe traffic congestion at intersections and traffic corridors. The main objective of this study was to demonstrate the optimization of traffic signal controllers using VISSIM microsimulation software. It aimed to minimize traffic congestion, emissions, and fuel consumption. This study focused on developing a traffic signal controller optimization program for a congested traffic corridor which consisted of a three-legged signalized intersection, a four-legged unsignalized intersection, and a three-legged unsignalized intersection. The entire corridor was modeled here, and the already signalized three-legged intersection was optimized. Traffic signal controller optimization was done separately through the built-in optimization features in VISSIM and Webster’s Method. The results showed that emissions and fuel consumption were reduced by 14.89 % in VISSIM optimization and 14.11% in optimization using Webster’s Method. Through the comparison between the VISSIM optimized signal timing and manually calculated signal timing, it was found that the signal timing optimization provides much more improved results than the manual signal timing calculations. Using the proposed methodology, the traffic signal controllers can be optimized within a short duration in very few steps without any iterations compared to the existing traffic signal controller optimization techniques. Therefore, the proposed methodology is a good alternative method to optimize the traffic signal controllers.

A Novel Left-Turn Signal Control Method for Improving Intersection Capacity in a Connected Vehicle Environment

Setting up an exclusive left-turn lane and corresponding signal phase for intersection traffic safety and efficiency will decrease the capacity of the intersection when there are less or no left-turn movements. This is especially true during rush hours because of the ineffective use of left-turn lane space and signal phase duration. With the advantages of vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, a novel intersection signal control model is proposed which sets up variable lane direction arrow marking and turns the left-turn lane into a controllable shared lane for left-turn and through movements. The new intersection signal control model and its control strategy are presented and simulated using field data. After comparison with two other intersection control models and control strategies, the new model is validated to improve the intersection capacity in rush hours. Besides, variable lane lines and the corresponding control method are designed and combined with the left-turn waiting area to overcome the shortcomings of the proposed intersection signal control model and control strategy.
