Microtrace Analysis of Rare Earth Element Residues in Femtogram Quantities by Laser Desorption and Laser Postionization Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: A newly developed laser desorption and laser postionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (LD-LPI-TOFMS) for the direct microtrace determination of rare earth elements (REEs) in residues has been presented. Benefiting from spatially and temporally separated processes between desorption and ionization, LD-LPI-TOFMS plays a dual role in alleviating the barriers of deteriorating spectral resolution at high irradiance, serious matrix effects and elemental fractionation effects at low irradiance. Compared with t… Show more

“…A reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer was built inhouse combined with multiple ionization sources, LDI-TOFMS and AuNP-assisted LDI-TOFMS, according to the previously described method with a few modifications [39,40]. Briefly, the ionization source consisted of a 355 nm laser (Minilite II, Continuum Inc., USA) with a 5 ns pulse duration and a 10 Hz repetition rate.…”

“…Incremental concentrations from 0.01 to 10 mg/L were used to calculate methodological LODs of four types of pesticides, which were sprayed on leaves directly. LODs were calculated from at least five replicates at each concentration level of the calibration curve by definition. , As shown in Figure , good linearity of calibration curves and excellent correlation coefficients ( R 2 ) better than 0.98 can be acquired. The LODs for rotenone, tebuconazole, oxasulfuron, and diafenthiuron were calculated to be 4, 9, 5, and 7 μg/L, respectively.…”

“…Additionally, although higher laser irradiance affords more detectable molecular species, the mass spectral resolution can be compromised because of the high energy dispersal of ions. Therefore, a time-lag focusing technique derived from a multichannel delay pulse generator was adopted for improved spectral resolution [ 38 , 39 ]. The region of interest (ROI) can be clearly observed by a built-in camera.…”
