Interminable surveillance and reconnaissance through various sophisticated multispectral detectors present threats to military equipment and manpower. However, a combination of detectors operating in different wavelength bands (from hundreds of nanometers to centimeters) and based on different principles raises challenges to the conventional single-band camouflage devices. In this paper, multispectral camouflage is demonstrated for the visible, mid-infrared (MIR, 3–5 and 8–14 μm), lasers (1.55 and 10.6 μm) and microwave (8–12 GHz) bands with simultaneous efficient radiative cooling in the non-atmospheric window (5–8 μm). The device for multispectral camouflage consists of a ZnS/Ge multilayer for wavelength selective emission and a Cu-ITO-Cu metasurface for microwave absorption. In comparison with conventional broadband low emittance material (Cr), the IR camouflage performance of this device manifests 8.4/5.9 °C reduction of inner/surface temperature, and 53.4/13.0% IR signal decrease in mid/long wavelength IR bands, at 2500 W ∙ m−2 input power density. Furthermore, we reveal that the natural convection in the atmosphere can be enhanced by radiation in the non-atmospheric window, which increases the total cooling power from 136 W ∙ m−2 to 252 W ∙ m−2 at 150 °C surface temperature. This work may introduce the opportunities for multispectral manipulation, infrared signal processing, thermal management, and energy-efficient applications.

Multispectral electro-optical/infrared payloads are being developed for a variety of defence and commercial system applications. Many applications depend on its ability to detect and recognize low-contrast and distant targets in a complex environment. The development of such systems necessitates the use of specialized optical filters capable of separating different spectral bands. We have designed and developed silicon-based plate beam splitter for 45-degree angle of incidence that will be used to separate the bands from visible to MWIR. This beam-splitter separates MWIR from VNIR and SWIR. The silicon beam splitter was developed using an ion-assisted e-beam evaporation technique. An average reflection of ~ 75% in visible and ~ 83% in SWIR region was measured using double beam spectrometer 1050 from M/s Perkin Elmer. An average transmission ~ 85% in the MWIR region was measured using FTIR frontier spectrometer from M/s Perkin Elmer.

Electro-optical/infrared multispectral systems are being developed for a variety of defence and commercial systems applications. An ability to detect and recognize the low-contrast and distance targets in a complex environment is of great importance for many applications. The development of such systems requires special optical filters which can separate the different bands as per the requirement. We have designed and simulated these two beam splitters at 45O angle of incidence that will be applied to separate the bands from visible to MWIR. For such an optical system, the beam splitter must separate the MWIR (3600-4900nm), SWIR bands (900-1700nm) and, visible (400-700nm). In this paper, we have reported thin film coating design and simulation of these two beamsplitters. The first beam splitter is used to separate MWIR from visible and SWIR. The MWIR is in the reflection channel and the other two bands are in the transmission channel. The second beam splitter separates the remaining two bands, visible and SWIR. The visible is in the reflection channel and the SWIR is in the transmission channel.
