Some well documented environmental effects of REE mining include surface and groundwater contamination, erosion, heavy metal contamination, acidification of soils, reduction of vegetation, a reduction of agricultural yield as well as an increase of natural hazards like landslides and flooding (The People's Republic of China, 2012; U.S. EPA, 2012; Liu and Bongaerts, 2014).
